While Wilder vs Fury 2 may not be the most significant heavyweight bout set to take place in the six months, with the Joshua Ruiz Jr rematch firmly in possession of that mantle; it’s most likely going to be the pick of the fights in 2020. Deontay Wilder, who currently holds the WBC heavyweight belt, is said to be taking on Luis Ortiz in a rematch on November 23rd, but the fight is still to be confirmed. There’s speculation that Wilder, who has 40 knockouts from 42 bouts on his record, is set to hold out to see what transpires in the rematch between Joshua vs Ruiz 2 in Saudi Arabia on December 7th.
These rumours were quickly dismissed by Team Tyson Fury, who suggested Wilder and his people would be in breach of contract as they have a signed agreement to take on the Bronze Bomber in 2020. With Wilder already having been in the ring with Fury, he’s said to fancy his chances against Joshua or Ruiz Jr over the Gypsy King. This would surely be a huge draw for any all boxing fans. Since the draw against Fury, Wilder went on to defend his WBC heavyweight belt against Dominic Breazeale, a fight which the Bronze Bomber won by knockout in the first round. Fury has fought and beaten Tom Schwarz and Otto Wallin, with the latter providing cause for concern ahead of the scheduled rematch between the Gypsy King and Wilder.
In the third round of their fight, Wallin connected with a heavy left hook which tore open a considerable cut above Fury’s right eye. While Fury managed to battle on and secure the win by unanimous decision, he needed medical attention immediately after the fight. Fury was therefore handed a two-month medical suspension, casting doubt on whether he will be forced to pull out of his rematch with Wilder in February.
Fury’s promoter Frank Warren has however suggested that everything is going to plan as far as recovery is concerned, with the Gypsy King taking a much-needed break from boxing after fourteen gruelling months in the gym. Warren said that the situation wouldn’t be clear for another six or seven weeks, however, because only then will it be known whether Fury’s injury has fully healed.
If the two cuts sustained against Wallin are still an issue around Christmas, it will prevent Fury from being able to spar freely. So, the fight could be pushed back or pulled, but as things stand, everything is on course for the February showpiece.
